Maltby Main 2, Eccleshill United 1

A late consolation goal was all Eccleshill got from a bitterly cold night in Rotherham as Maltby Main clipped the Eagles' wings.

It was a shock result as Maltby were lower mid-table strugglers, while Eccleshill were on a good run in the league, despite their loss in the FA Vase in a replay at Pickering Town on Tuesday.

Mark Flanagan, Chris Rosindale and Ross Heywood all missed chances to put the Eagles in front before Maltby's Ashley Longstaff scored the only goal of the first half.

Scott Summerville netted a flicked header to put the home side 2-0 up with 17 minutes to go before Stuart Waite snatched one back.

There was a minute's silence before the game in memory of the son of United's physio who was killed in a traffic accident on Tuesday.

"All three of our teams will observe the same courtesy this weekend as a mark of respect," said club spokesman Paul Jarvis.

"Our thoughts and condolences as a whole club are with Phil Radcliffe (team physio) and his family at this time of grief for them.

"Phil's son Craig, who was only 22, was killed on his moped on Dick Lane earlier in the week.

"Phil hasn't been with us this week but he hasn't been out of our thoughts. A lot of the younger players at our club knew Craig very well.

"There are no tragedies in sport but unfortunately there are in life and things like this put everything in perspective."
