AFTER months of virtually no competition, the Bradford Open took place on Sunday and saw victory for professional Calum Hey at Keighley Golf Club.

It was young Hey's third success at the tournament, with the former Keighley member and current Shipley assistant professional having won it in 2013 and 2017.

He won the shortened tournament by one stroke, edging out fellow young starlet Ben Rhodes, with a level par 69.

Discussing the tournament itself, and his delight at competitive golf returning, Bradford Golf Union president Simon Tabel said: "We didn't think we'd be getting tournament golf in the Bradford Union (at this stage).

"But when the government lifted restrictions and allowed you to play people outside of your household, we asked Keighley Golf Club if they'd mind hosting the tournament and they were very happy to.

"It was reduced to 18 holes from the usual 36, but 77 played, including nine local professionals.

"Calum won it for a third time. He used to be a junior member at Keighley and now he's assistant professional at Shipley.

"On the day, it was very windy and testing conditions, so his score was very impressive, especially given he started with four bogeys and an eagle in the first five holes.

"He came back in two under par on the last nine though, to finish level par for the tournament.

"He beat last year's winner Ben Rhodes (Woodhall Hills), who shot 70, and home favourite Andy Fitzpatrick (Keighley), who finished third with 72.

"In terms of marshalling the tournament, we had lots of Keighley members, with some on every hole raking the bunkers and tending the flags.

"We were looking for a proper competition (no upside down hole cups etc), so the players weren't allowed to touch the flags but members could, which they appreciated."

Tabel added: "We've got the Clubman's Championship at Bracken Ghyll this Sunday and we've got about 115 down to play in that.

"It's great to have golf back and in full swing, and as president of the union, I'm really pleased to be getting competitions underway again, particularly with this one (the Bradford Open) taking place at my home club."
