BILLY Clarke is being strongly linked with a third spell at Valley Parade.
Reports claim the Irishman could be on his way back to City after rejecting a new contract at Grimsby.
But the Telegraph & Argus also understands that Clarke is not one of the targets that Stuart McCall is thought to be close to signing.
The striker was released by Gary Bowyer following the relegation into League Two in 2019.
He had a short spell with Plymouth for the first half of last season before joining Grimsby in January, scoring twice in 13 appearances.
Ian Holloway had hoped to keep Clarke for next season but City appear favourites to bring back the 32-year-old, who has scored 26 times in his previous stints at the club.
