Liversedge went top of the NCE Premier Division table in midweek and boss Steve Newton is aiming to ensure it will not be a fleeting visit to the summit.

Newton, appointed in the close season under the shadow of Gerry Quinn's resignation, has flourished in the role of manager. It is his first major job after gaining a good grounding as reserve-team manager at Bradford Park Avenue.

"We all know they don't give prizes for league positions in November but it is a nice feeling to be top of the pile," said Newton.

"No-one is getting carried away - the others have games in hand on us - but if you are at the right end of the table at this time of year you can look forward to the new year with optimism and not just hope.

"Everything has been going well just lately but we need to be more clinical in front of goal. We are creating lots of chances and many of them have been going begging - we should have been five up before Parkgate scored on Tuesday.

"We came from a goal down, scored four, got the six points in the four days that we needed to go top but it came the hard way. I keep telling the players that it won't always come right.

"If you go into a game against anyone in this league, not just the top teams, and don't take a good percentage of your chances you will end up dropping a lot of points.

"I might run the risk of sounding like a perfectionist but we have to be more clinical in and around the opposition's penalty area. It's not rocket science, there are basics that need to be taken care of."
