STUART McCall predicts there may not be a flurry of new recruits when City can start building for their next season.

Tomorrow’s meeting between clubs and the EFL should decide how the current League Two campaign will be settled.

The Bantams, like every team in the four tier, have already indicated that they want it stopped for financial reasons rather than trying to play on behind closed doors.

The bottom two divisions are both expected to vote to end their seasons now – which, in City’s case, will provide some closure as they try to plan ahead.

But no date has yet been put forward for when 2020-2021 might kick off, limiting how much advance work can be done.

City recently announced that 10 out-of-contract players will be leaving but recruitment plans remain on hold until they hear about a potential schedule.

McCall said: “We all need a defining idea to when the season is going to begin.

“Nobody is bringing players in. They are releasing them but not signing anyone.

“When I speak to agents, they all get it. You ask what the case is with all the clubs and everyone’s the same.

“I spoke to Luke McGee, as an example, who’s obviously back at Portsmouth. He’s had a couple of inquiries but nothing definite.

“We’re all in the same boat. Everyone has got to wait and see.”

McCall was preparing to run a smaller squad next season even before the coronavirus pandemic threw everything up in the air. He now expects every club to use lesser numbers than before.

Up to 1,400 players could be looking for new teams this summer as lower-league football fights for financial survival.

But McCall is not anticipating a frantic shopping spree at this stage.

He added: “We’ve got 14 players signed on for next season and we’re adding four young lads getting promoted from the youth team.

“I would probably say we are looking for a squad of 22-23, so it might not be a case of a raft of signings.

“It might even be five loans. Again, there’s no certainty on anything at this moment."

The one-year clauses in the City contracts of Clayton Donaldson and Zeli Ismail will automatically be activated once the season is officially declared over. The club have also opened talks about keeping Richard O’Donnell.

The transfer window remains another grey area - with some calls to leave it open for the whole of next season.

City director of communications Ryan Sparks admitted: “That’s another subject that hasn’t been discussed at any level.

“We don’t know what the transfer window looks like and when it’s going to open and close. Therefore, you don’t know the true value of the market until deals start being made.

“I don’t believe any deals have been made to my knowledge in the EFL divisions. It’s a very quiet market and needs an injection of adrenaline.”

It is understood that the four trainees identified as future first-team prospects by McCall and his coaching staff will be offered pro terms once the club are in the position to do so.

“It would be nice for a few of our young lads to come through,” added the City boss. “If they are good enough, they will certainly play."
