BRADFORD & Bingley Sports Club are counting the cost of flooding for the second time in five years after Storm Ciara struck.

The River Aire burst its banks under the weight of rainfall and the Wagon Lane ground quickly became a watery landscape.

Adam Swallow, chairman of the cricket club who share facilities with Bradford & Bingley Rugby Union Club, Bingley Bees Hockey Club, Bingley Harriers Athletics Club and Bradford & Bingley Canoe Club, said: "The flooding is as bad as 2015. The water is up to the top of the railings on the scoreboard side of the ground and over the rest of the ground it is knee high.

"It has got in to the clubhouse where all the carpets have been ruined and we won't know until the water subsides what other damage there is.

"We have been unable to check on our mowers, but we are hopeful that we raised them sufficiently off the ground to keep them safe."

Swallow was at the ground at a practice session in the recently refurbished indoor nets when the flooding took place.

He said: "At 8am the car park was just wet, by 9am there was two inches of water and 30 minutes later everywhere was flooded and the water was seeping in to the nets. We managed to get up two of the mats, but they are very heavy and couldn't get to the others."

Bradford & Bingley do not know yet what debris has been deposited by the flood water. They will be hoping that the playing surface isn't contaminated in anyway.

Swallow remains philosophical about the situation. "We know that when the river level drops and the water subsides that we will face a big clean up operations.

"The people I feel most sorry for are the residents who live near the ground whose homes have been flooded. Seeing them baling out puts everything in perspective."

The Yorkshire Cricket Board, ECB and Sport England will be providing assistance for Bradford & Bingley Cricket Club and the other clubs in West Yorkshire whose grounds have been flooded.

The list includes the Halifax League clubs Bridgeholme, Copley, Sowerby Bridge and Mytholmroyd and the Aire-Whare trio of Ilkley, Ben Rhydding and Tong Park/Esholt.

League chairman David Young said: "Our thoughts are with Bradford & Bingley and all the other clubs in West Yorkshire affected by flooding.

"I know only too well the devastation that flooding can cause after my club Esholt was severely hit in 2015. This time we look to have got off more lightly as there is no longer any floodwater on our pitch and some of the measures we put in place after the last time have limited the damage.

"I just hope there is a change in the weather. More rain would be devastating for all the clubs as all of them were affected severely in 2015 and this has come as a cruel blow. I am sure the cricket community will rally round and support them in any way they can."
