WYKE have announced that two of their players from their title-winning squad have been selected for the Yorkshire Lionhearts squad which will tour Serbia in September.

Calvin Barker and Charles Grocock are set to become the club's first open age representatives for the Yorkshire Men's League select side.

It is well-deserved recognition for the Black and Whites following their triple success last season, which included winning all 17 games on their way to the Division Two crown and retaining the Bradford ARL Senior Cup.

Wyke coach Ian Wormald said: “Both Calvin and Charles deserve their place in the squad.

"They are there representing not only Wyke but everyone who has had a say in their rugby careers so far.

"This is a massive personal achievement for the lads, but also a massive step for our open age squad and ultimately the club.

"With the success of the first team over the past few years, this was inevitable and I’m now looking forward to this kind of news more often."

Centre Barker, who picked up the division's player of the year as well as the first team player of the year and top try scorer, has played at Wyke as a junior and is also assistant coach of the under-15s.

Grocock, who returned to the club three years ago, scooped the players' player prize last season after winning the most improved the previous year.

The former martial arts international is renowned for being an 80-minute prop with a massive presence on the pitch.

The Yorkshire Men's League agreed a three-year deal in 2018 with the Serbian Rugby League Federation as part of the RFL’s Lionhearts programme.

The Lionhearts played in Belgrade that year, with a Serbian select side touring Yorkshire in 2019.

The teams are due to play in Serbia again this autumn, with Wyke planning to help fund the trip for their duo.

Wormald said: "There is a cost for the lads to go to Serbia. I will be looking to set up some fundraising activities to assist them in their journey.

"I’m sure the whole squad will get behind the lads and I’m also sure they will represent the club in a very positive way. I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly congratulate them and wish them all the best."
