GARY Bowyer’s striker search goes into deadline-day overdrive to fill the gap left by the double departure of Eoin Doyle and James Vaughan.

Doyle yesterday sealed his anticipated return to Swindon for an undisclosed fee, understood to be worth six figures.

His exit and the deal surrounding Vaughan’s loan to League One strugglers Tranmere could net City up to £250,000 if all the clauses are met.

But Bantams fans are now waiting anxiously to see how the club cover the loss of two players who have scored 34 goals between them this season – even if Doyle’s were all in Swindon colours.

Bowyer said: “There are one or two types that are out there at this moment we’re looking at. But they’ve got to be the right person to fit in with the group.

“The one position every manager asks about is, ‘have you got a striker?’

“We’re not blessed with financial funds to go and buy someone. The ones that are available might cost you quite a bit of money.

“It’s a case of keeping on that phone and working hard. But if the right player was to come up, I would certainly take it to the board and see if we can do it.”

Winger Dylan Mottley-Henry has returned to City from Barnsley four years after being released. But Bowyer is looking to add another frontman.

City were knocked back by Northern Ireland international Will Grigg, who is not willing to drop down a division from Sunderland. They have also been linked with Swindon’s Kaiyne Woolery.

A failure to land a suitable replacement would only increase the heat from sections of the support after last week's protests at Mansfield against the manager.

Bowyer will not reveal any targets but insists any late arrival before the transfer window shuts at 11pm must fit right with the squad.

“The group are tight and you saw that the way they ran around and fought for each other on Tuesday, especially when we went down to 10 men,” he added.

“The character of a possible replacement and how they are in and around the building as well as on the football pitch is mightily important.

“It’s relationships and you don’t always get those right.

“I wouldn’t go out and get someone just for the sake of it. Look at the lads we’ve got.

“Clayton Donaldson’s return is timely, Zeli (Ismail) trained yesterday, we’ve got Remy (Oteh) and Omari Patrick, who has scored goals for Wrexham, Shay McCartan who can play up there as well, the same as Jamie Devitt.

“Then you saw the impact of Dylan Connolly up front in the first 40 minutes. We certainly have options that wouldn’t limit us if we didn’t bring anybody in.”

City are also preparing for tomorrow’s trip to Oldham as they look for a first win since New Year’s Day. They have drawn four and lost two of the six games since.

Devitt is suspended and Kelvin Mellor is out for at least a fortnight through injury.

Bowyer said: “We’ve got to kick on now. We’ve got to turn these draws into wins.

“Once the window closes, there are no more distractions. It will be a case of doing all we can to get going for these final 16 games.”
