WELCOME BACK

CLAYTON Donaldson’s impact was clear to see as the big man’s presence lifted those around him.

It’s not just his hold-up play that City have lacked during his injury absence. Team-mates look up to him and that experience and know-how on the pitch is invaluable.

And the confidence with which he stuck that penalty away should have helped to settle any nerves about the reaction after Mansfield. Make him captain full time.

PROPER SHIFT

The crowd of 12,731 was the lowest for a league game at Valley Parade since October 2018 but those who were there stayed with the team.

They recognised a spirited performance from players prepared to put in the effort for their club.

Do that consistently and the support will rally behind them whatever the outcome. What no fan will accept is anyone in the claret and amber appearing to slack off.

UNITED FRONT

If the presence of Eoin Doyle and James Vaughan has been unsettling the squad, as has been insinuated by some of the suggestions coming out of the City camp, then there are no excuses now.

Tuesday’s performance suggested a team in synch and Gary Bowyer was quick to heap praise on the togetherness and spirit in his side.

But now they have to back that up on a consistent basis, particularly away from home. Oldham must see more of the same.

RASH DECISION

When Jamie Devitt returned to Valley Parade in August, he said he had matured since his previous loan spell.

But he let his enthusiasm get the better of him on his return to the starting ranks with the unnecessary challenge for his second yellow card.

Already on a booking, there was no need to dive into the tackle like he did on Charlie Raglan – even if the Cheltenham centre half really milked it afterwards.

MANAGE EXPECTATIONS

After the chants and jeers of Mansfield, Gary Bowyer was pleased with the positivity around Valley Parade.

But he knows that the mood will turn again just as quickly if City don’t turn up against Oldham.

Bowyer is not out of the woods with a large number of fans and urgently needs that elusive away win this weekend or the boo boys will start up again.
