A TEENAGE jockey from Bradford has achieved his first win, after an impressive ride at Kempton, and is hopeful that a change of trainer won't break up a burgeoning partnership with his new horse.

Johnston Racing's apprentice Aiden Smithies, who is from Eccleshill, stormed to victory by a length and a half on Interrupted Dream last week, after finishing fifth on him at Chepstow a few days earlier.

It was a third ride for Smithies on the two-year-old horse but circumstances have changed since his fine victory.

The 19-year-old admitted: "He's been sold to another trainer since the win so hopefully I'll get another ride on him.

"It's up to the trainer and it's whether they want to use their own jockeys or not. I've ridden Interrupted Dream three times and I know how he goes so it would be nice to race on him again."

The pair were perfectly in sync at Kempton, with Smithies saying: "The race always went my way. The one at Chepstow was further. He needed less distance and it was spot on for him at Kempton.

"He's a good horse to learn on, nice and quiet. We make a good team."

Smithies also paid tribute to Wilsden Equestrian Centre, where he rode from the ages of four to 16.

Speaking about his time there, he said: "They were good. They taught me the basics and got me up to where I needed to be. The owners and all the people who worked there were really helpful."

Asked about what the future holds, Smithies said: "Hopefully, I can make a career out of being a jockey and still be riding in 10 or 15 years time.

"I don't really have any races or racecourses that I dream of riding, I just want to run as many races as I can."
