BULLS prospect Cobi Green has come out of his comfort zone after being sent to Coventry.

John Kear has acknowledged the young half-back’s progress by naming him in the 23-man Wales squad for the upcoming Nines World Cup in Sydney.

That will be whittled down to 16 after this week’s training camp in North Wales.

The 20-year-old from Treorchy made his Bulls debut in the 1895 Cup when Kear took a youthful team to Barrow.

Green was then sent on loan to Coventry Bears – and his head coach believes that experience of playing League One rugby has toughened him up.

Kear said: “I’ve always said that you can get cosseted playing age-group rugby all the time.

“You’ve got to play against men to see exactly where you are.

“You can’t seriously do that when you’re playing under-19 against under-19.

“The only time is when it’s the big fellas coming after you.

“That’s how you extend your comfort zone, by being taken out of it. Then all of a sudden, it becomes comfortable.

“He did himself credit and I’m sure he’ll do the same on this camp.”

Green, who also took part in the Students four nations championships in Scotland during the season, is joined in the international training squad by Bulls team-mates Rhys Evans and Dalton Grant.

Kear added: “He’s progressing really well. We’ve got a number of good youngsters coming through and Cobi is one of them.

“Obviously we’re trying to give him experience in the mini-camp. It will do him good to mix with people like Ben Flower and company.

“It’s part of his development and if he shows up well, you never know he might end up being very lucky and going down to Australia.”
