JONNY Tattersall hit a superb 92 to lead an impressive Yorkshire fightback from early strife with the bat on day one of their Specsavers County Championship clash with Nottinghamshire at Scarborough.

The 24-year-old wicketkeeper fell eight runs short of his maiden Championship hundred, but his contribution was every bit as significant as the hosts recovered from 38-5 to post 232 all out inside 77 overs after tea.

Notts then responded with 41-0 from 17 overs before close.

Tattersall calmly composed his Championship best score off 197 balls with nine fours, although missed out on topping his maiden first-class hundred against Leeds/Bradford MCC Universities in April.

He shared 121 inside 41 overs either side of lunch with Tim Bresnan, who made a fine 58 off 122 after the hosts had slipped to 7-3, 13-4 and 38-5.

Notts stand-in captain Chris Nash, deputising for injured Steven Mullaney, had elected for an uncontested toss and opted to bowl first as they bid for a first win in 11 games this season.

Left-arm seamer Luke Wood did the early damage for the Division One’s bottom side, claiming 5-28 in a devastating nine-over spell with the new ball.

Wood took advantage of swing, seam and extra bounce to wreck the White Rose top order under a sunny sky at North Marine Road before finishing with 5-67 from 17 overs.

He had Adam Lyth caught behind, Gary Ballance caught at point off the shoulder the bat and Tom Kohler-Cadmore bowled in the space of six balls in the second and fourth over of the game.

Later, he had Harry Brook caught behind and Will Fraine caught at third slip by Nash.

While Bresnan was chanceless, Tattersall made the most of an early life.

He offered a chance behind to a diving Tom Moores on four off Jake Ball, although the wicketkeeper parried it for four diving to his right in front of Ben Duckett at first slip.

From there, he punched down the ground with authority and played late with guides and deflections aplenty on the way to 50 off 103 balls.

Bresnan also played confidently down the ground on the way to a 99-ball half-century.

He was one of two wickets to fall in the afternoon as Yorkshire advanced from 84-5 at lunch to 192-7 at tea.

Left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White removed both men on the way to 4-34 from 17.1 overs in only his third first-class appearance.

Bresnan fell caught behind pushing forwards during the afternoon - 159-6 in the 55th over - before Keshav Maharaj was bowled by Luke Fletcher as the score fell to 179-8 after 60.

Shortly before, Maharaj had got off the mark by pulling Fletcher for six to pass 3,000 career first-class runs.

Patterson-White’s third wicket came when he trapped Ben Coad lbw - 212-9 in the 71st - before he wrapped up the innings by bowling a sweeping Duanne Olivier.

Notts batting has been a real problem for them this season, with many a top order collapse undoing them.

But openers Jake Libby and Ben Slater set about a sturdy response on this occasion against Coad, Olivier, Patterson and the left-arm spin of Maharaj.

They will begin day two on 12 and 29.
