CITY’S League Two status puts them down the pecking order in the scramble for late transfer deals.

Gary Bowyer still wants to add a couple more to his Valley Parade squad before the window shuts on Monday, September 2.

It remains a hectic progress for the Bantams chief – but he admits that being in the bottom division can mean it takes longer to get moves over the line.

He said: “I spoke to a manager the other morning and he was saying that he needs to get a player in before he can release one. It’s a domino effect.

“Sometimes, where we are in terms of league position and status, we’re probably the last.

“You’ve got wait for one club to get someone in, then that releases another club, then another. We’ve just got to keep playing the waiting game and see what happens for us.”

Eoin Doyle's departure on a season-long loan to Swindon yesterday should free up more room in the wage budget. It is understood City were close to the 50 per cent limit of the club’s turnover permitted under the Salary Cost Management Protocol rules.

“The plates are still spinning,” added Bowyer. “I’m getting blisters now but we’ll keep working away at it.

“It’s difficult because there’s obviously the criteria you have to meet with financial fair play as well.

“Those conversations have been on-going and we’ve got to wait and see what happens in the next couple of weeks. It always gets exciting as the deadline draws near.”

Meanwhile, Bowyer has been impressed with the way Danny Devine has begun the season and has suggested he will see more involvement.

“Danny brings a sense of calmness and composure on the ball. He’s obviously ‘one of our own’ and the fans identify with that.

“He goes about his business ever so well with that added tag to it of being a Bradford lad. He’s a good passer and I thought he did better against Preston on Tuesday.

“But he’s done that ever since I’ve been at the club, to be perfectly honest. He’s making good strides again.”
