GARY Bowyer wants to see goals coming from all areas for City.

James Vaughan’s header at Grimsby last week represents the only time they have scored so far.

As the Bantams prepare to host Oldham on Saturday, Bowyer is looking for contributions from all over the pitch – and includes the back four in that.

He said: “It’s all our jobs to chip in with goals and we can’t just rely on the front two.

“I think it’s important we have defenders scoring as well.

“The year that Bolton got promoted from League One, their top goal-scorers were (David) Wheater and (Mark) Beevers.

“That shows you the value of everybody scoring across the pitch and we want more people to do that.

“Set-plays are a massive part of the game and certainly something we want to make a big contribution this year.”

Sean Scannell is expected to make his first league start after playing 72 minutes in the Carabao Cup against Preston. Shay McCartan could also be in the squad.

Bowyer added: “Shay has trained with us all week and looked sharp again. We’ll have to make a call on him.

“We’re entering a busy period now and I hope he will feature.

“He has this incredible ability to go past people. He can shoot, score goals and provide assists and he’s going to be a big player for us.”

City head into the third weekend of the League Two campaign looking for a first win after successive draws. Bowyer is waiting for them to click as a team against an Oldham side who are likely to pack men behind the ball as Cambridge did at Valley Parade on opening day.

“We’ve had some good moments,” said the Bantams boss.

“I watched the chances we created at Grimsby again and there’s some good build-up play. We just need to see more of that on a consistent basis.

“That’s what this league is about, consistently doing the basics right, and we’ve been working on it again this week.”

Oldham are also yet to get off the mark after suffering defeats in the opening two games under new head coach Laurent Banide.

"He is an unknown in this country and opened up a different market for them with the players he has been able to attract.

“They’ve got a completely different model to anybody else in League Two with the amount of bodies they recruit from abroad.

"They've got good technicians and it will be interesting seeing them get used to (playing) Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday because it comes thick and fast in this league.

“They lost narrowly to Forest Green and Crewe and both games could have gone either way. It’s just the fine margins."
