THERE was a nine goal thriller in limited West Riding County Amateur Football League action at the weekend.

Double late postponements on Friday evening meant only two games went ahead.

The pick of the pair saw Lower Hopton just edge out visitors Steeton Reserves 5-4 in a mid-table clash with little to play for.

Lower Hopton were cruising at the break, leading the sixth-placed side by four goals to one.

Steeton put in a valiant effort in the second half, with three goals pulling them close to getting something from the game, but a single Hopton strike got them all three points.

The home side's top scorer Liam Royle added to his season's tally with a hat-trick for his team.

This was added to by a goal each for Aaron Kennedy and James Heeley.

Steeton's four came from separate sources.

Greg Hudson, Arron Davis, Josh Debenham and Ryan Newall were the players on target.

The result gave Hopton revenge for their 3-2 loss in the reverse fixture back in September.

In the only other fixture, Route One Rovers returned from a run of two postponements in a row to beat Toller 3-1 away from home.

The visitors were ahead all the way, with Toller only providing some sign of a comeback with a goal in the second half.

That eventual consolation came from Umar Zahoor.

The goals for victors were courtesy of Geoffrey Mpankuli, Johnathon Mwembie and Awais Khan.

Route One Rover's win saw them leapfrog Steeton Reserves into sixth

One of the postponements came from the Lepton Highlanders and Littletown fixture.

The other involved league leaders Golcar United who were due to travel to second-bottom club PFC.

A lack of players were the reasons give for Lepton and PFC needing to cancel their Premier Division ties.

The league management decide at this late stage of the season to award the three points to both Littletown and Golcar.

This means not much has changed in the top five.

Bradford Olympic remain in eighth place despite having resigned from the league over a month ago now.

Only two teams are in with a shout at the title, with Golcar in pole position to repeat their success of last season and make it two in a row.

Littletown, who have never won this division in its current guise, sit 10 points behind the leaders, but can take solace in the fact they have two games in hand on Golcar.

A victory in both those fixtures would see them close the gap to four and anything could then happen in the final two weekends of fixtures.

It remains a big ask, but a strong showing this campaign for Littletown, after finishing fifth last year, perhaps gives them their best chance in recent history to claim the silverware.
