ONLY nine of the 37 scheduled fixtures across the whole of the Yorkshire Amateur League went ahead at the weekend thanks to appalling weather conditions.

There was penalty pressure for Prospect in a Hancock Cup Semi-Final home tie against fellow Division Three competitors Lepton Highlanders.

The Highlanders, who are struggling at the foot of the table in the league, dominated possession for much of the game but failed to take their chances in a goalless first half.

Prospect went two up in the second thanks to Jason Farrell and Kingsley Rowe, before a Lepton equaliser in the 93rd minute to make it 2-2 took the tie to a dreaded penalty shoot-out.

Step forward Prospect goalkeeper Alan Sunderland who made two fine saves to win it for the hosts four goals to one.

The biggest score of the weekend came in Division Four, where relegation-threatened Beeston Juniors Old Boys Reserves did their cause huge favours with a 9-6 victory away to St Bede's Reserves.

Joseph McLoughlan will perhaps feel aggrieved that he scored four for Bede's but still ended up on the losing side.

It was closer than the final result showed at half-time with the score sat at 4-3 in favour of the visitors.

But Beeston secured the win with five second half goals and move level on points with Thornesians Reserves who are just outside the relegation zone.

Up in Division One, there were eight goals shared between Thornesians' main side and Idle.

After dropping five points out of a possible last six, Idle were in need of a victory to maintain their push for promotion and they duly delivered in this 5-3 away victory.

Thornesians are playing well at the moment and thus the win was both timely and well earned.

Idle may have been worried about a repeat of their high-scoring draw a week before with the scores level at 3-3 at the break.

But two second half goals sealed the victory which sees Idle close the gap on the division leaders Collegians ahead of their away match against them this weekend.

Idle's Ryan Mitchell was on hand with a brace, supported by a goal each for Adam Medley, James Royal and Aaron Irving.

Tom Simonett was given the Man of the Match award on his return to centre midfield for the visitors.

Thornesians' goalscorers were Jordan Page, Jack Willis and Gaz Hill.

Farsley Celtic Juniors are beginning to pull away at the top of the Premier Division with a 3-0 win at home to Grangefield taking them seven points clear of second-placed Drighlington who didn't play at the weekend.

The leaders also have a game in hand on their closest rivals.

In atrocious conditions, Farsley found the Grangefield keeper in superlative form and he kept the score down to reasonable proportions.

A first half defensive mistake allowed in-form Louis Surtees to run into the area and place the ball past the keeper.

The second goal came after 65 minutes when Ben Wilson hammered home at the far post.

Ten minutes later and a similar defensive slip to the first provided Louis Surtees with the chance to run on to the loose ball and move towards the visitors goal before placing the ball into the net for his second goal and a comfortable Farsley victory.
