DAVID Hopkin is backing City to get back on the goal trail in tomorrow’s basement battle at Walsall.

The Bantams will climb above their hosts in the scramble to stay up with victory at the Banks’s Stadium.

But they have not scored for three games since David Ball’s late strike in the 4-3 win over Shrewsbury.

Hopkin, though, does not see the mini-drought as cause for concern because of the opportunities still being created.

“I think most teams go through it,” said the City chief. “We’ve also been a bit unlucky with a few decisions going against us and not managed to pick up points we should have.

“That would probably have put us clear of the bottom four by some distance.

“But the goals will come. We’ve got a lot of players in the team now that can score.

“I would be worried if we weren’t creating the chances. But we’re doing that and I’m sure they’ll start going in the back of the net like they were in December.”

City bagged 19 goals in seven games that month, including a 4-0 thrashing of Walsall at Valley Parade.

They beat Rochdale by the same emphatic margin but Nathaniel Knight-Percival’s close-range finish to open the scoring was the last goal to come from a set-piece.

That is an area Hopkin wants to improve on after a string of corners went begging in last week’s goalless draw with Plymouth.

He added: “I don’t think it’s just down to the strikers, it’s everybody. You can’t just rely on Eoin (Doyle) and George (Miller) to get your goals or we are going to struggle.

“The centre backs should be chipping in with a few more goals. We had 12 corners last Saturday and I don’t think we got a head on any of them.

“These are things where everybody has got to step up to the plate.

“We work on our movement but we’ve had no joy from corners over the last few weeks.

“We need to make sure the centre backs and other players are going to go in and attack the ball and have that desire to try to score a goal.”

City go into the game two points behind Walsall, who have lost five on the bounce to leave manager Dean Keates fighting for his job.

Hopkin does not expect his side to get caught up by the hype of such a key clash.

He said: “It’s a massive game for both clubs but we’ve been down here for 80 per cent of the season. It’s something we’re used to and we play with no fear.

“There’s maybe a league of 10 at the bottom and we need to try to finish top of that if we can.”
