IT was a case of which team was most clinical in the Toolstation Northern Counties League Cup fourth round as Selby Town brought Eccleshill United's undefeated streak to an end with an impressive 3-1 victory, despite the Eagles having the best of the game.

Even though Sean Regan's men were dominant in possession and created countless clear-cut opportunities, a lack of quality in front of goal cost the side, as the Division One opponents proved to be ruthless at the opposite end of the field.

Selby Town created three great chances and managed to put all three in the back of the net, while showing brilliant game management in order to progress into the quarter-finals. It was through an unfortunate slip by Matty Stor that Selby created the first goal of the game, letting the Selby striker have a clear run on goal.

The initial strike was well saved by Harry Stead, who returned to the starting 11 for the cup game but was only pushed into the feet of Gary Collier, to tap in from close range.

Despite going behind, the Eagles continued to play some impressive football with Jake Thompson working well down the right flank to cause issues, picking out Tom Dugdale in the box, only for his strike to be well saved from close range distance, denying Eccleshill an equaliser.

However, the Eagles managed to get the breakthrough via Khurram Shazad, who continued his fine form in front of goal, scoring in consecutive games as he was picked out by Thompson who fired the ball into the top corner despite Selby having three men on the line.

Unfortunately, Eccleshill failed to stay level for too long as a long, route one ball proved to be effective as Stead was lobbed only for Collier to be on hand to smash the ball into an empty net to secure Selby's second of the game.

Eccleshill continued to be the more dominant of the two sides despite the scoreline, pushing for another equaliser with Matt Mathers being involved in a goalmouth scramble and then Chris Lever having a big chance as his one-on-one shot was well saved by the Selby goalkeeper.

However, Selby extended their lead early in the second half with a brilliant piece of passing football cutting apart the Eagles with a crossed ball being fired straight into the back of the net by Selby's leading goalscorer, Liam Flanagan, giving the visitors a two-goal advantage.

But the theme of the entire game continued, with Eccleshill creating chances but failing to put them in the back of the net, with a mixture of fantastic defending and poor finishing resulting in the Eagles failing to get a second in the game.

Even a 75th minute red-card for Selby after a headbutt to the returning Luke Harrop saw them drop to 10 men couldn't help Eccleshill breakthrough as luck simply wasn't on their side, with Shazad being denied his brace by the woodwork and Lever putting a header just wide of the target as Selby working hard off the ball to ensure they saw out the victory.
