CALUM Woods has got out of League One twice – and is confident he won’t be making it a hat-trick this season.

Woods will make his home debut tomorrow night in City’s crucial showdown with fellow strugglers Shrewsbury.

He made an assured start at left back in the draw at Burton and has already seen enough around him to suggest his new club can beat the drop.

Why Calum Woods is keen to learn from Stephen Darby

Woods has won promotion from the division before with Huddersfield and Preston and doesn’t expect to be slipping out the other end.

He said: “It doesn’t feel like a club who are second from bottom. I know how tough this league is from before but you see the quality of players we’ve got.

“We’ve just got to stick together, dig in and give everything.

“You come into training and see everyone working hard and trying to do what they can for the club. There’s no sign of anyone giving up.”

Woods points to Saturday’s fightback at Burton as evidence – the first time this season City have come from behind in the league.

“It was a good starting point for me coming in,” he added.

“Conceding like we did right on half-time was a kick in the teeth but we regrouped and came back strong.

“The gaffer had told us about that stat at half-time and wanted us to show a reaction, which we did.

“It was my first full 90 minutes of the season and I was tiring near the end. I went straight into the ice bath afterwards but I’m ready to go again, if selected.”

Adam Chicksen’s availability after serving his two-game ban for the red card at Barnsley gives David Hopkin an alternative option.

Connor Wood was incorporated into the side against Burton by being pushed further forward into left midfield.

The youngster believes that having the know-how of Woods and fellow full back Paul Caddis to call upon will help his development.

Wood said: “It’s only a positive to add more competition and can only help me become a better player.

“It’s great having an experienced head that I can go to and ask for advice. That can only be a good thing.

“They’ve been through this before so it’s always good to have that around.

“When I signed for Bradford, I always knew I would have to fight for my place. But the harder you’ve got to work makes you better in the long run.

“It’s always good to have a balanced squad. You’ve got the experienced lads who’ve seen it, been there and done it and the younger ones coming through hungry to play and work their socks off.”

Woods is eager to get his first taste of the Valley Parade pitch. He was an unused sub in Preston’s 3-0 win at City in Easter 2015.

He said: “You saw from the fans at Burton that it’s a big club. That’s why I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere of playing at home.”
