THERE was penalty shoot-out drama for two league high-flyers in a quarter final cup tie.

St Bede's, challenging at the upper end of the Yorkshire Amateur League Championship, took a break from league action to face Leeds City in the Yorkshire Old Boys' Shield.

Leeds City themselves are battling for the Premier Division title in the West Yorkshire Association league and would have had strong confidence they could make it through to the semi-finals, particularly with the news that St Bede's only had a squad of 12.

This was a game with little to write about in the first half, with the second period bringing about clear cut chances for both sides.

Leeds from open play and St Bede's taking advantage of set pieces.

But the two still could not be separated and it eventually went to penalties where Leeds won 4-2 and so move onto the semis.

A spokesperson for St Bede's said: "It's gut wrenching losing on penalties in quarter finals and we're making a really good habit of being in the wrong side of these."

Holders of the cup, Farsley Celtic Juniors got through their tie against Wortley with a 5-2 win.

In the league, there was a heavyweight clash at the top of Division One.

Fourth-placed Idle battled back from a two goal deficit to secure a 2-2 against top of the table Woodkirk Valley and keep them within touching distance of the title, with games in hand.

It was a poor opening 20 minutes from Idle who found themselves 2-0 down following two soft goals.

However, some quick fire subs and a change of shape saw Idle get a foothold in the match.

The second half was a completely different affair with Idle dominating most of the play and creating the better chances.

Carl Dawson got Idle's first goal with a curled finish around the on-rushing keeper. Tom Holmes then got the reward for his hard work as his cross from deep looped over the keepers head into the far corner.

In an exciting Premier Division tie, Calverley came out on top of Ealandians in a 4-3 win thanks to some late drama.

Ealandians were 2-1 ahead until the 60th minute when Jack Mills drilled home for Calverley from 25 yards.

It was 3-2 to the visitors shortly after, but Calverley came back to equalise in the 90th, before a Dale Spink goal from five yards proved to be the winner.
