CITY are close to adding another striker in the frantic rush towards the transfer deadline.

David Hopkin is keen to add “two or three” more to his squad before the window shuts on Thursday night.

And the Telegraph & Argus understands that the Bantams are looking to start the week by clinching a deal for a frontman.

City have been monitoring Bournemouth’s Sam Surridge throughout the month – but have made it clear he is among several targets who have been lined up to increase their attacking options.

Hopkin revealed that he is not prepared to hang around too long for some potential recruits and risk missing out on others.

He said: “We’re getting to the stage now where there have been stalls in movement in terms of other clubs having injuries and different things.

“There are also midweek games on Wednesday night and ours on Tuesday, which isn’t great.

“I’m happy with the squad I do have just now and we do have options with how we can play.

“But I’m still looking for another two or three if I can. There are areas where we need to make sure we’ve got players playing in their right positions.”

City still aim to bring in a winger – and have one in mind - with Sean Scannell expected to be out for another three or four weeks.

Hopkin was impressed with David Ball’s performance in a wide role in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Burton, adding: “He was excellent on the right-hand side and gives you everything.

“David’s a model professional but hopefully we can get someone in there this week.

“With the winter weather coming in and the pitches getting a bit more frosty and harder, we want to make sure we have players that can change the game.”

City came from behind to get a point for the first time this season thanks to Hope Akpan’s equaliser – and Hopkin sees that as a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s vital home clash with 18th-placed Shrewsbury.

He feels the focus has returned to his side after back-to-back defeats against Barnsley and Southend.

The City boss said: “January is a strange month for everybody in football.

Players get distracted by things that might or might not be happening. A lot of nonsense goes on.

“But I keep telling the players that the teams who can concentrate in January and believe in what they want to do can go on a run.

“I’ve seen a difference in training all week. The players looked a bit more bubbly on Thursday and Friday.

“They are starting to think that we can win games again.

“The fans have got to be patient and stick with us. Every time we get that negativity, it affects the players.

“You’ve got to remember we’ve got a young squad with a lot of players who haven’t been through this before.

“I thought our fans were magnificent second half, really got behind the team and with a wee bit more quality we could have won the game.

“We’ve set ourselves a target with what we want to do from the three games this week.

“We know it’s going to be tough. But we’re doing everything we can to make it positive.”
