ALEX Jones has joined League Two side Cambridge on loan until the end of the season.

The injury-dogged striker has made only three sub appearances this term – and lasted just 10 minutes in the final one against Coventry in October before pulling a hamstring.

Jones, who signed for City from Birmingham in January 2017, was out for 11 months after ankle surgery last December.

The 24-year-old is one of the players that David Hopkin advised to look elsewhere for regular football after being told they were no longer in his first-team plans.

Jones, whose contract is up in the summer, made just 16 starts for City out of 30 appearances but scored 10 goals.

Cambridge are currently 19th in the bottom tier, five points above the relegation zone.

Jones said: "I knew there was interest at the start of the window and it's been bubbling away in the background for a few weeks, so I'm really delighted that the deal is now sorted.

"Speaking to head coach (Colin Calderwood) and a few players who are here now and have been here previously, they couldn't speak highly enough of the club and that drew me towards it and made my mind up for me.

"The most important thing is to gain plenty of match minutes under the belt. If I can put a run of games together, keep fit, then I back myself to score a lot of goals to help the team as much as I can for the remainder of the season."

Calderwood said: "In Alex, we've acquired the services of a good goal scoring centre forward who has shown a strong record previously. This loan provides him a great platform to quickly build on his goal scoring credentials."
