CAMPION will begin the new year at the top of the table after consolidating their leadership of Division One in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League with a 2-1 win at mid-table Glasshoughton Welfare.

The home side took an early lead when Matthew Semley raced through and fired a shot past visiting keeper Declan Lambton.

Campion levelled just before the half hour mark when Leon Hurle-Brook slipped his marker and drilled a shot under Welfare keeper Jacob Collier.

James Bicknell’s side completed their comeback when substitute Andy McCreadie scored in the 75th minute. It was the substitute’s first involvement as he climbed to head a high cross past Collier.

It was an important away win as it maintained Campion’s three-point cushion as their two closest challengers both won.

Eccleshill United remained in the top half of the Premier Division and ahead of their three local rivals, with a 2-1 win at Garforth Town. The Eagles netted the only goal of the first half in the 11th minute, Chris Lever claimed the headed goal but it was credited as an own goal by Joe Colley.

Lever definitely doubled the visitors lead when he fired in from distance midway through the second half. A foul inside the area with three minutes remaining gave the Miners a lifeline and led to a tense ending as Lee Turner netted the penalty.

Liversedge and Thackley were both beaten by the odd goal away from home. Sedge visited Worksop Town and although they went a goal down, Craig Mitchell breaking the deadlock, Sedge were behind for just over a minute as Danny Farrar equalised on the half hour mark.

The Tigers clinched the all important goal in their 2-1 win from the penalty spot as Matt Sykes fired in from the spot five minutes into the second half.

There were two penalties in the game as Thackley lost 3-2 at Athersley Recreation.

The hosts began the scoring with the first one as Lee Garside netted from the spot after a Ryan Basi foul in the area. The Rec doubled their lead through Simon Poole in the 26th minute but minutes before half time Adam Muller was pushed over in the area and Dan Broadbent drilled in the resulting penalty.

The Dennyboys levelled the game before the hour mark through James Ngoe but the Rec bagged all three points courtesy of Aiden Salmons 78th-minute winner.
