JOHN Kear is already seeking out insider tips on how to win in Toronto.

The Bulls do not make their historic first trip to Canada until May 4.

But head coach Kear has wasted no time tapping into the knowledge of someone who came away from there with a victory in the Million Pound Game last season.

Odsal old boy Elliot Kear was in the London Broncos side that edged it 4-2 at the Lamport Stadium in October to pip the Wolfpack for promotion to Super League.

As Wales captain, he then played under Kear in the European Championship – and the Bulls coach took the opportunity to glean any advice in preparation for their own ground-breaking Transatlantic mission.

The veteran coach has not been to a live game in Toronto and was keen to learn from his namesake’s experience.

Kear said: “I respect Elliot greatly and spent a fair bit of time with him in the Wales camp doing some Bradford homework about how they tackled the Toronto trips last season.

“Elliot felt they didn’t get it right the first time - but obviously did when they won the final. He’s given me some little tips that I’ll be drawing on with us.

“It’s not just the logistics of the trip. You need to plan a rotation as well within your team for the week after – that’s one of the points Elliot made to me.”

The Welsh skipper warned about the sense of anti-climax the following week – which is round six of the Challenge Cup in the Bulls’ case.

Kear added: “Elliot was saying that the adrenaline kicks in over there because it’s new and vibrant. You’re there to perform.

“But he felt the downtime was the week after. We have to ensure we don’t have that and maybe part of doing that is with squad rotation.

“We have got a big squad and I feel we’ve got 30 Championship players, so I’d be foolish not to use them.

“Hopefully we’ll still be in the Challenge Cup at that stage. When that’s drawn out, we may have to look at the rotation.

“If we’re not in there, it may be a recovery week. These are all things that need to be taken into account.

“But the conversation I had with Elliot was really useful with regards to Toronto.”
