DAVID Hopkin admits City must learn to think on their feet to have the best chance of beating the drop.

The Bantams are still League One’s basement side after blowing the opportunity to overhaul Plymouth and Wimbledon.

They led three times at Home Park on Saturday but were pegged back to a 3-3 draw by third-from-bottom Argyle.

Two of the Plymouth goals came from corners – which has proved City’s downfall too often.

Hopkin insists his players have to organise themselves better as games unfold to deal with set-piece threats.

He said: “It’s lapses in concentration, nothing else. But that keeps costing us.

“We make a couple of fantastic saves and blocks. But when the ball goes dead, that seems to be when we’re at our worst.

“We go over it all the time but it comes down to responsibility. That comes from players.

“We were in the dressing room afterwards and everyone was asking who was marking who for the third goal. That disappoints me a wee bit.”

Hopkin was particularly annoyed with Plymouth’s final equaliser from a corner after George Miller had fired City in front for the third time.

He added: “When somebody comes on and it’s in the last 10 minutes or whatever, they are going to throw caution to the wind and put bodies in there.

“You must be prepared to organise and make sure you go and mark someone. I felt we didn’t do that for the third goal.

“Things change in football games all the time with substitutions and things like that. We put players on and so do they and you have to adapt.

“Sometimes you’ll work to a structure of how the other team are going to do their set-plays. But then it changes and you’ve got to react.

“We’ve got a lot of experienced players in the team and they’ve got to take a bit more responsibility and make sure they are organised.

“It’s not good enough that it’s two corners that have done us.”

City did gain a point on Scunthorpe, who are currently six ahead in the position above the bottom four.

But Hopkin feels they should be going into this run of three home games on the bounce, beginning with tomorrow night’s FA Cup replay against Peterborough, on the back of a huge away win.

He said: “The players have been fantastic and the Bradford fans who travelled down have seen a team that are getting harder to play against.

“We’ve got good players, it’s just these lapses in concentration at this moment in time.

“But I thought we played some decent football and should have gone up the road with three points.

“I don’t think Bradford have beaten Plymouth for a while and that continues. But we were very close to it and we would have done it if we had managed certain situations better.”

Hopkin will consider making changes for the Posh clash when he assesses his squad at training this morning.

“We’ll see how the players are and who’s fit and ready. There were a few that were unlucky not to start on Saturday.

“But I felt it was the right team to get a result and we scored three goals. We just need to take a wee bit more responsibility.”
