Just to remind all members that the next general meeting is our Christmas meeting on December 18, commencing at 8pm.

Potential new members will be made most welcome and at £20 per year to join, it is a great bargain. We have some exciting trips for next year and hope to add to these some great day trips.

May 10/18 to Clare Island on the West coast of Ireland, aboard top boat and skipper Darragh McGee and his boat "White Water II", as well as a trip to the Shetlands on July 20/24.

There is also a trip to Culdaff on August 7/14, with John McLaughlin and his boat " Gemini 2". This trip will mark the 25 years of fishing Culdaff, so it will be a special and nostalgic trip.

Also, Brian Clarkson is going for a personal grand slam. He is attempting to catch and release three species, a tope, a shark and a skate all in one year. That should be fun. Watch this space.

Membership books for next year should be available in the tackle shops before Christmas at the same price as this year.

Not many anglers have been out in recent days. The canal offers some decent fishing but at this time of year, swim selection is of paramount importance.

This has been shown in reports that have come in, as some anglers have struggled for odd fish, while others have had quite good results.

What does come through is that swims should be baited up sparingly to start with, until it is established what fish are present and what their feeding mood is in.

Tackle should be as light as reasonably can be used. Bread punch is always a favourite bait.

SKIPTON AA

The final match of this season’s Skipton Winter League will be fished on the Long Ing length of the canal at Barnoldswick this Sunday. It will be the seventh match, with final positions based on their best six results of each competitor.

After the poor sport experienced at the last match on the Broughton Road length of the canal at Skipton, when only five anglers managed to weigh-in, Long Ing will give those who were displaced from their lofty positions in the league a chance to get them back.

Fishing is normally good on this stretch of the canal but the weather forecast may throw another spanner in the works, as much colder nights could be the norm by weekend.

If this materialises and sport is again below average, we may see another drastic change in the league table positions, with no further chance of putting them right.

In spite of the recent damp and dismal conditions, Whinnygill Reservoir has been providing some sport for those wishing to wet a line.

One angler had an enjoyable afternoon's fishing when the first fish he landed turned out to be a good conditioned brown trout weighing about 2300g.

No further bites followed, so he moved to another spot where he soon had a bite that he missed.

Once again, there was a long interval when nothing was happening so he just started to prepare to go home when he had another bite which turned out to be an ide.

The bites then followed in quick succession and he caught several perch, another seven ide and a solitary roach before the approaching darkness brought fishing to a halt.

The Skipton Angling Association has arranged a working party for another session of tree planting at Embsay Reservoir on Sunday, December 16. If the weather is decidedly wet or very windy on this day, then the following Sunday will be utilised.

The event is open to members or anyone interested in improving the environment at this location.
