CITY have officially announced the appointment of Anton McElhone as the club’s new assistant head coach.

As revealed in the T&A last week, McElhone arrives at Valley Parade following a spell with MLS side New England Revolution, having previously worked for Tottenham Hotspur and Hibernian.

The Scot, who specialises in sports science and conditioning, will work alongside head coach David Hopkin and his backroom team.

McElhone said: “This is a fantastic opportunity and I am delighted to be joining such a huge club.

“I have been good friends with David (Hopkin) over the years and we have very similar ideas on how we want to do things.

“My job is to assist the gaffer in the philosophy of how he wants the team to play. We need to get the most out of every department – technically, tactically, physically.

“I will work closely with Martin Drury and the team. There are some great staff here and my work will complement theirs.

“I joined New England as part of Brad Friedel’s coaching staff, in a football-fitness role, with emphasis on the development of players.

“I was at Tottenham for 10 years, working with several top managers and some superb players.

“This is a big club and there are good players here. You have to make sure you get the best out of every possible area.

“It is a case of looking at how we can improve all of the small details and improving our position.

“Hopefully, over time, my work will improve the players’ mentality, physicality and technicality.”

City boss Hopkin added: “I am absolutely delighted to be welcoming Anton to the club.

“He has worked at a high level for several years and he will bring a great deal to Bradford City.

“He will assist me and Martin and work alongside the medical and performance department.

“I have been looking to bring Anton to the club for a few weeks now and he was keen to come here following a stint in the United States.

“I am sure he will have a big impact and help us drive our way up the league table.”
