Evo-Stik Southern League 2018/19

Division 1 South

Evesham United 0

Cirencester Town 2

Cirencester made the comparatively short journey to Evesham United and after a battling performance came away with a welcome three points to move up to 5th in the table writes Dave Pyzer.

The home side started very positively to put Cirencester under pressure for the first 15 minutes but Cirencester gradually began to work their way into the game – particularly down their right flank.

At the mid-point of the half Alan Griffin struck the woodwork with a header but shortly afterwards he released Ben Whitehead into the area to open the scoring with a typical clinical finish.

In response Evesham mounted a couple of dangerous counter-attacks to test debutant ‘keeper Martin Horsell but as the half was drawing to a close Cirencester finished strongly with Griffin having another effort blocked near the line.

On the stroke of half-time a free kick reached Ellis Dunton at the back post and his low volley from a narrow angle eluded everyone to enter the net inside the far left post.

After the interval Evesham pressed to win a number of corner kicks but Cirencester stood firm and around the hour mark a quick counter resulted in Tommy Ouldridge firing wide of the left post.

Almost immediately Marley Thomas headed over for Evesham as the home side pressed again.

In the final quarter Cirencester were relying on counter attacks with Tommy Anderson often the outlet as he produced driving runs to ease the pressure – particularly down the left flank – and from one he fired wide of the right post after bursting into the box as Cirencester claimed the win.
