A SUPERB all-round performance from Farsley Celtic saw them to a deserved 3-1 victory over Evo-Stik Premier Division leaders Scarborough Athletic at Throstle Nest.

There were a sprinkling of former Guiseley players in Steve Kittrick’s Boro squad and a couple of notable former Farsley men, one of them being striker James Walshaw, who played for both the Lions and the Celts.

Scarborough had good spells in the game but the hosts were outstanding in every department.

Farsley broke the deadlock midway through the first half. A shot was blocked after Paul Walker drilled a low ball through the area and Nathan Cartman pounced to fire high into the net.

Boro ended the first half strongly and they took that momentum into the second half to score a 55th minute equaliser.

Right back Josh Lacey sent in a good cross and Michael Coulson planted a header past the outstretched hand of Celts keeper Kyle Trenerry.

The visitors’ keeper was former Farsley stopper Tom Taylor and he had no chance as the Celts re-took the lead from the penalty spot.

A vicious shot form Jimmy Spencer was blocked by a defender’s hand and Will Hayhurst lashed the spot kick into the bottom corner.

Just six minutes later, the excellent Walker forced another corner, Hayhurst delivered and Adam Clayton arrived to meet it with a powerful header past Taylor.

Farsley manager Adam Lakeland said: “I thought we started well but after getting our goal we let them back into it and then gave a poor goal away.

“We had a free kick but we took it quickly, I don’t know why and it was a bad decision. We lost possession and they get the equaliser on the counter attack.

“The penalty was a definite handball and the referee had to give it really because the shot was flying in. We scored that to go in front but we didn’t sit back, we just kept playing the same way and we got the third goal.

“I thought we played well at the back though. Scarborough’s front three are as good as any but we kept them quiet and I think that just proves how well we defended.”

Brighouse Town also maintained their promotion push, in Division One East, with a 2-0 home win over Belper Town thanks to goals in each half.

Aaron Martin headed them into a tenth minute lead and Gabby Johnson nodded in a second 12 minutes after the interval. The Nailers were immediately below Brighouse in the table but they tumble to eighth following the defeat.

Vill Powell’s men, who host Bradford (Park Avenue) in the West Riding County Cup on Monday, move up into third.
