UNBEATEN WBO European champion Darren Tetley says he’s hoping to give back to his loyal set of fans when he makes his long-awaited homecoming.

Tetley, from Holmewood, fights for the first time as a professional in his home city of Bradford, competing over six rounds at the Bradford Hotel a week today.

It’s his first fight since he captured the WBO European welterweight title with a ninth-round stoppage over Mason Cartwright at the Elland Road Stadium in May.

The 25-year-old told the Telegraph and Argus that he’s looking to offer something back to those that have supported him in his 16-0 professional career.

“I think that I should get a really good reception and that’s certainly what I’m hoping for,” said Tetley.

“To be able to fight in Bradford as the WBO European champion, it means a lot.

“It’s about giving back to my fans, who’ve gone to Leeds, Doncaster and Rotherham to support me. Hopefully, everybody enjoys their night, it’s a successful night for me and I can keep coming back in the future. Hopefully, I can sell out Valley Parade one day, that’s the ultimate aim.”

Tetley’s triumph over Cartwright was his career highlight to date; a first professional title, a first stadium fight and a first television appearance on BT Sport.

Since then, he’s suffered a back injury and admitted that he’s questioned his love for the sport.

“During the summer, I injured my back, I wasn’t getting the fights that I wanted and I was fed up and really down on boxing,” revealed Tetley.

“To be honest, I didn’t want to be doing it anymore because I’d gone off such a high from winning a title on a massive show and I really wanted to build on that and fight consistently.

“For whatever reason, that hasn’t happened. I can’t take my eyes off the ball in this fight but moving forward, hopefully after Christmas, I can get these big fights.”

One of those big fights may be against newly-crowned British champion Johnny Garton who last month won the British title in a gruelling encounter with Gary Corcoran.

“I thought Gary Corcoran was going to win and be too strong down the finish, but Garton boxed brilliantly and showed he can fight,” Tetley added.

“I went straight on Twitter and said that I wanted the winner, which is not something I usually do. Tyrone (Nurse) is fighting (Liam Taylor) in a (British title) eliminator (on November 17), so that’s looking less likely now.

“I’d love to fight for the British title and I do believe that one day I will. It’s just about waiting and biding my time.

"Whoever’s got that British title, if I get offered it, that’s whoever I’m fighting, whether it be Tyrone, Taylor or Garton, I don’t care.”
