GUISELEY will be dreaming of a big FA Cup First Round tie against one of the Sky Bet League clubs after they earned their place in Monday's draw with a 3-1 win over a very good Stourbridge side.

The Lions had home advantage and are a step higher on the football pyramid but they were made to fight by the Glassboys, who were able to cancel out Will Thornton's opener with a strike of their own.

In fact, it was the visitors who edged the first half and they continued to look dangerous in the second period, but goals from Guiseley substitutes Lewis Walters and Kaine Felix settled the tie in their favour.

Joint manager Russ O’Neill was pleased that his side had got over the line, saying: “It was a real tough game and exactly what we expected.

“Going in at half time at 1-1 I think the lads were a little bit deflated, but we knew that if we came out in the second half and matched Stourbridge’s endeavour and tried to play on the ball that we’d get our rewards.

"In the end, I think we deserved to go through but the frustrating thing in that first half was that we’d played well and gone in front but again we’d conceded a goal minutes later.

"It was from another restart, a throw-in, and Stourbridge have their tails up and to be fair to them they ended the half strongly.

“We regrouped and organised the players and we had some of the walking wounded back with some good players on the bench that could affect the game. It’s a great result for the players and collectively as a club.”

When asked about the draw and who he would like to see the Lions play, he responded emphatically: “Sunderland away.”

He and the rest of the coaching staff, and the players, will have to wait to see it they are to get a trip to the Stadium of Light to take on the Black Cats.

They opened the scoring against Stourbridge after Curtis Morris was fouled just outside the area. Alex Purver chipped the resulting free kick in and Will Thornton leapt highest and guided a header into the top corner for his first Guiseley goal.

The lead lasted just four minutes before Luke Benbow netted a stunning equaliser for the Glassboys. A throw-in was not dealt with and Benbow lashed the loose ball past Joe Green with a superb overhead kick.

The home side were getting frustrated at their failure to break the visitors down, but O’Neill and his co-manager Marcus Bignot made two second half substitutions which paid off.

Luke Walters put the Lions back in front in the 75th minute after Kayode Odejayi turned the ball across the six yard box for him to stroke it into the unguarded net.

Then, with just ten minutes remaining, fellow substitute Kaine Felix steered a low shot from the edge of the area past the diving James Wren in the visitors’ goal to clinch the win.
