BRADFORD No1 AA

A SECOND placed finish for Geoff Scollick's Calder 8 team in the sixth and final round of the Calder League was just enough to clinch a very close series, with outstanding catches being made from all stretches on every match.

Calder 8's 43 points in the last round was one behind Punky's 8, while two points separated the next three teams in Bradford No1 (35 points), Mirfield (34 points) and Drennan Barnsley (33 points).

This gave Calder 8 a total of 33 points from the six matches, which was just one point ahead of Punky's 8, who had a better total weight.

Mirfield and Drennan Barnsley were also within touching distance of the title with 29.5 points and 28 points respectively, followed by Bradford No1 (24.5 points) and Willy Worms (15 points).

The final round continued the trend of impressive individual catches as Punky's 8 angler Tim Peters caught five big chub on stick float for an incredible 29lbs 3oz from Lillands Farm and also lost another two of similar size.

The next three anglers were all fishing for Calder 8 as Darryl Taylor took second place with 23lbs 4oz, Craig Turbitt came third with 22lbs 11oz, fourth was Paul Bennett with 17lbs 10oz and Punky's 8's Martin Hope completed the placings with 17lbs.

Barnsley's Dennis White proved that consistency is key as he topped the aggregate weight standings with an outstanding 108lbs 12oz, despite not winning a match.

Craig Turbitt finished second with 91lbs 6oz, followed by David Armitage (89lbs) and Darryl Taylor (81lbs 5oz). Well done to all anglers who took part in this year's series.

Raskelf Lake will be closed on Sunday for the final member's match of the year. This match is sold out and will draw at the Black Bull at 9am.

Simon Freer leads the aggregate weight with 76lbs 4oz, followed by Nick Michael (54lbs 13oz) and Fred Prudham (50lbs 1oz).

2018 membership is now half-priced until the end of the year and available to purchase online at www.bradfordno1.com.

Members are also reminded that this year's AGM will take place on Wednesday, October 10 at 7:30pm, with a free pie and pea supper provided. Please do not forget to bring your yearbook as entry will not be granted without one.

BRADFORD CITY ANGLING ASSOCIATION

Not much to report this week, though barbel, chub, roach and perch continue to come out of the Swale at Topcliffe, and one or two good fish have been caught from still waters at Shipton and Staveley.

However, there are three items to bring to the attention of members.

Tomorrow at 9:30am we have a general tidy up, tree and snag cutting at Staveley Lakes. If you can spare a couple of hours to help, then please let James Lynch know (contact details in your yearbook) or else turn up on the day.

We suggest that volunteers wear strong shoes, boots or wellingtons, and gloves would be useful too.

North Yorkshire Council has started essential maintenance at Inghey Bridge where the A59 crosses the river, which will continue until mid-November.

No parking is currently possible at Inghey and the only access to Broughton Lane is from the Skipton direction. Parking may be possible in a lay-by on Broughton Road 200 metres before Inghey.

There is also parking on Heslaker Lane, though this is quite a walk. Alternatively, there is access at Gargrave.

We do not recommend using the entry at Highgate Farm, because of very limited parking and the danger of fast-moving traffic on the very busy A65.

Finally, please note that our next match, planned for tomorrow at Staveley Lakes, has been cancelled, due to the Match Secretary’s role being vacant.

If you have any queries, or are willing to be Match Secretary, then please call Jim Munden on 07940 814431.

LEEDS & DISTRICT A.S.A

As a further move to protect fish stocks, there is a new limit on the match weights that can be retained in a single net (60lb with a discretion of 70lb).

Anything over 60lb will be deducted but anything over 70lb and the entire contents of that net are disqualified.

The result of Wednesday's match at Moor Monkton Pools was: 1. M. Gallagher (81lb 12oz); 2. S Jeffreys (69lb 10oz); 3. M. Green (47lb 11oz); 4. S.Armitage (43lbs 2oz).

The lower Aire continues to fish well. In a match of a member club, Burley AC, the winner caught a specimen bream weighing 8lb 3oz.

The number of local tackle shops is dwindling and the latest to go is J.T Rodgers.

LISTERHILLS A.A

The trout season has now ended and any trout caught must be returned immediately, no matter what their size.

The last canal open match at Armley was fished in strong winds and there was an overnight drop in temperature. The winner was B. Mason, who also drew the golden peg and his winning were considerably boosted.

The winning weight was a modest 2lb 2oz, with second spot going to R. Movley (1lb 8oz) and third to E. Harrison (1lb 7oz). These were the only anglers to weigh over 1lb, though everyone caught.

Next Sunday's open match is on the Aire Valley Marina length with the draw at 10am.

BINGLEY ANGLING CLUB

The A.G.M. will take place on Tuesday, November 13 at Ryshworth club with an 8pm start and any new proposals should be with the club secretary by the end of this month.

The canal is still fishing well for nets of small fish and the odd bream, especially at Crossflatts.

SKIPTON AA

Skipton Winter League competitors have been in action recently and the first two matches have produced some excellent weights compared with some of those experienced in the last couple of years or so.

The opening match was on the gas works length of the canal at Silsden and the weights were boosted by the capture of some decent bream and one or two perch above average size.

Mark Bradley enjoyed a comfortable win with 2,430g while Ernie Ramsbotham was second with 1,600g. Other leading weights were: 3. Rob Thornton 920g; 4. Jason Aldis 820g and 5. Bill Davenport 620g.

In the pairs event, Bradley and Davenport were top with 3,050g whilst Ramsbotham and Mawson took second place with 1,690g.

Aldis and Heaton were third with 1,310g, Thornton and Chenier fourth with 1,280g and in fifth spot were Wright and Eason with 990g.

Last Sunday’s match was fished on the Broughton Road length of the canal in rather cool conditions with a strong wind blowing along the water, making fishing difficult and chilly for the anglers.

Sport was not affected however and some really good weights were recorded, consisting mainly of quality roach.

Kenny Wright was way out in front with 4,220g, which consisted of a good pike weighing some 3,510g.

The pike apparently took a small perch that had just snatched a small worm fished on a size 20 hook. With such light tackle it took Kenny some 45 minutes to land the fish.

Other weights were: 2. Bill Davenport 1,500g; 3. Jason Aldis 1,420g; 4. Rob Thornton 1,290g and 5. Russell Heaton 1,270g.

The pairs standings were: 1. Wright and Eason 6,010g; 2. Heaton and Aldis 2,690g; 3. Thornton and Chenier 1,790g; 4. Thomas and Wharton 1,540g and 5. Bradley and Davenport 1,500g.

The leading competitors after the two matches are: 1. Aldis, Thornton and Davenport 7 points; 4. Wright 11; 5. Ramsbotham 13 and 6. Heaton and Wharton 14.

In the pairs, the standings are: 1. Aldis and Heaton 5; 2. Bradley and Davenport and Wright and Eason 6; 4. Thornton and Chenier 7; 5. Ramsbotham and Mawson 9; 6. Thomas and Wharton 10.

The next match will be fished on the Long Ing length of the canal at Barnoldswick on Sunday, October 14.
