BULLS’ on-field captain Steve Crossley believes the strong competition in the Bradford squad could be the difference as the club heads into the League One play-offs.

Despite John Kear ringing the changes, the Bulls produced a convincing 52-7 win over Hemel Stags and Crossley commented on the desire of the side, especially in defence, to secure the victory.

Crossley also hailed the impact of youngsters Matty Storton and Oliver Wilson, following their seamless transition into the first team.

“Eight of us got rested this weekend, ahead of the finals, so the boys out on the pitch generally had less game time this season and it was a chance for them to show their worth,” said Crossley.

“All those who played are pushing for a shirt. We’re all looking at the play-offs and our chance to play and they all gave a great account of themselves, so John (Kear) will have some decisions to make.

“Sometimes it’s good to have rest and recharge yourself. I’d rather have a full squad of players raring to go and the performances at the weekend will only spur people on.

“Only conceding once gives us a massive confidence boost. We speak about it in training all the time and the desperateness we showed in our goal line defence was a real plus.

“We take real pride in our defensive work. We know if we make a mistake someone will be there to help out, but in tight games, defence can give you a real spark of energy.

“The young lads have gone great. Matty has hit three games on the bounce and crossed in each, grabbing a couple of man of the matches, and Oliver came in and smashed his debut, it’s great to see.”

Bradford kick-start their playoff campaign at home against Scott Naylor’s Oldham side, who the Bulls beat 24-16 just two weeks ago.

However, Crossley doesn’t believe there will be any mental advantage from what has gone before as the sides head into a sudden death clash.

Crossley also paid tribute to the Odsal faithful for their support this season, while urging them to show up and make the difference at the business end of the season.

“I wouldn’t say there is a mental advantage, we know their game from previous but that works both ways. This is knockout football now the regular season has gone,” said Crossley.

“We know they’re tough down the middle, we need to match that, even try and better it, because that’s where the game will be won or lost. We didn’t go up first time of asking and this is our chance now.

“The fans are massive for us, they’ve been immense all season, turning up in big numbers despite everything that’s happened in recent years.

“On the field it’s a huge boost home or away. All I can ask is they keep rallying behind us. Let’s finish the season on a high together because they deserve it.”
