North One East: Scarborough 26 Cleckheaton 19

TRAILING 21-19 late on, Cleckheaton lost the ball deep in Scarborough territory.

As the ball was cleared downfield, James Wilson carried the ball over the touchline and, trying to prevent a quick line-out, threw the ball away and was penalised.

As time was running out, Scarborough went through several phases and eventually livewire hooker Sam Dawson crossed for his second try of the game to gain a bonus-point win, still leaving Cleckheaton with a losing bonus point.

Cleckheaton travelled with four changes from their victory against Bradford and Bingley, with Niall Jackson replacing Tim Mobbs, the unavailable Josh Plunkett and Brad Marsden being replaced by Tom Austin and James Crowther.

Scarborough kicked off but the visitors hadn't got their hands on the ball when Dawson carved his way over for the opening try in the second minute, which was converted by Tom Ratcliffe.

However, Cleckheaton levelled after a couple of ruck phases, with the ball being moved left for Mike Swetman to power over for a try which he converted.

Cleckheaton missed a 35-metre penalty in the 10th minute but they were behind 15 minutes later when

Ratcliffe crossed for a good try down the left which he converted.

But back came the visitors to level with a similar move down the left, with James Wilson scoring and Swetman converting.

Scarborough then took the lead in first-half stoppage time after working space on the left, with an inside pass putting lock Aaron Wilson over for Ratcliffe to convert.

Early in the second half, Cleckheaton made a couple of changes, with Thiu Barnard coming on for the injured Jack Seddon and Ronan Evans replacing Martin Woodhead on the wing.

Cleckheaton applied a lot of pressure in the next 20 minutes, and a Ben Dearing counter attack up the left wing was supported by James Wilson and Joey Carley, who was stopped short of the line.

When the ball was recycled, Evans gave a scoring pass to Keiron Downs, who crashed over near the corner flag, but Swetman hit the upright with the conversion attempt.
