Vanarama National League North: Guiseley 2 Nuneaton Borough 1

KAINE Felix’s stoppage-time goal gave Guiseley their first victory of the new season in Vanarama National League North to set them up perfectly for tomorrow's trip to Altrincham.

The Lions were on a run of three consecutive draws, and it seemed that that sequence was about to be extended as they and basement boys Boro were all square in the 90th minute.

But Guiseley, who had come back from a 1-0 half-time deficit, forced a last-gasp goal that lifted the lid on Nethermoor.

Former Bradford City left back Niall Heaton, the long throw-in expert, launched the ball into Nuneaton’s area in the third of four added minutes.

It caused uncertainty in the Boro defence and Felix lashed a low drive past keeper Cam Belford.

The game had been in the balance since the 64th minute when Alex Purver, on as one of two changes during the interval, drilled a shot from just inside the area into the bottom corner after Kingsley James’ excellent lay-off.

Boro had taken the lead midway through the first half when Enoch Andoh was played through by Dior Angus, and Andoh took the ball into the area before slotting it under Guiseley keeper Joe Green.

Marcus Bignot, one of the Lions’ joint managers, didn’t know that it was 309 days since the last Saturday home win for the club.

He said: “That’s two games in a row now when we’ve scored in the dying minutes to get a result, and it just shows the character of the side.

“I wasn’t aware that it’s been so long since a home win and I’m glad I wasn’t part of the whole thing – just a little bit towards the end.

"This win is one for the supporters then because 309 days is far too long on a Saturday afternoon – you want to be winning your home games.

“We were 1-0 down and we had to do something and make some changes and I’ve always said that you’re only as good as the group, and the substitutes came on and made contributions.

“We have to go again now against Altrincham. They won 3-0 and I’m pleased for them but there will be a feel-good factor about our club as well now after this late goal turned out to be a winner.

“The players have never been down since we came in but now everyone involved with our club will be a bit more relaxed and optimistic.”

The Lions head to Moss Lane to take on an Alti side that will be high on confidence after victory at Darlington.

Guiseley leapt four places up the early table to 15th, one point and one place above Darlo.

Altrincham are riding high in eighth spot but they are yet to win at home.

The three games they have played at Moss Lane this term have produced just one point following a draw and two defeats.
