Kyle Nix can be part of Stuart McCall's promotion push.

The City boss has decided that Nix has shown enough promise to be worth a proper deal with City.

Left-footer Nix, who worked under McCall at Sheffield United, had been given a month at the Coral Windows Stadium to prove his worth. And McCall has seen enough to warrant making a new offer.

The midfielder's initial short-term contract expired today and discussions are underway for something more permanent.

McCall said: "Kyle has merited staying longer and we just have to sit down and sort it out. Performance-wise, training-wise and attitude-wise, he deserves a deal.

"Kyle lacks that little bit of natural pace to be an out-and-out winger but he's clever. And if you've got Omar Daley or Joe Colbeck on the other side, he can give you different options on the left.

"He's a clever player who joins in well. His best position is probably in a three-man midfield but he's got a good left foot and he's tenacious." Nix spent a year playing non-league football after being released from Bramall Lane but he was handed a second chance by McCall, who invited him in for pre-season.

A bright display in the friendly with Burnley earned the youngster a further month to convince McCall he could be a useful addition to the squad.

Nix got his first proper opportunity in the Carling Cup at Wolves and grabbed it by notching City's late consolation goal. His first league start on Saturday confirmed the manager's view that he was worth keeping on.

McCall added: "We hadn't talked about it beforehand but he must have felt a little bit of pressure on himself because of the contract situation. He was very keen to get on the ball and worked hard and I just want that hunger all the time now."

Meanwhile, Alex Rhodes is expected to be back in action in just over a week. He missed the Wrexham game after picking up a slight hamstring injury at training.

City were assessing the extent of the damage suffered by Darren Williams when he pulled his groin on Saturday.
