Albion Sports and Liversedge are one stride down the road to Wembley after winning their ties in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup yesterday.

It was Kulwinder Sandhu’s Albion who arguably had the best result as they won 3-0 at Northern League side Penrith thanks to a good second-half performance.

Sandhu lost three of his best players in the close season, last season’s top scorer Danny Facey, Alex Cusack and Omar Habeeb, but he still keeps getting a tune out of his threadbare squad.

The Lions’ boss even tempted former Bradford Park Avenue keeper John Lamb out of retirement and he marked his Albion debut with a clean sheet. While Lamb kept the hosts out, Jamal Stewart broke the deadlock midway through the second half.

Ombeni Ruhanduka doubled the visitors’ lead before Stewart bagged his brace with a last-minute strike.

Sedge also had a great result in the first game of the season at Clayborn after improvements to the clubhouse and dressing rooms over the summer.

Jonathan Rimmington’s men hosted Padiham and the Lancashire side led at half-time courtesy of Chris Turner’s opener. However, three goals in an 11-minute spell turned the game Sedge’s way.

The visitors hit back through Michael Samson but Sedge weren’t finished and netted a later quick-fire double to make it 5-2. Sam Akerod (74) and Mitch Hamilton (75) added to Joe Walton’s brace and a Rhys Davies strike that all came before the hour mark.

Of the three local teams eliminated at the first hurdle, Eccleshill United can count themselves the most unfortunate. The Eagles were beaten 1-0 at Congleton Town following a debatable penalty midway through the second half.

Thackley are also out following a 3-2 defeat at home to Whitley Bay. The visitors led 3-0 at the break with goals from Jack Foalie, Peter Glen-Ravenhill and Luke Salmon.

The Dennyboys fought back as Nicky Matthews netted on the hour mark before Jordan Hines added seven minutes later, but they couldn’t complete the comeback and ended on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller.

Silsden’s interest in the competition was ended following a 3-1 loss at Hallmark Security League Premier Division rivals City of Livepool FC.

A brace from the home side’s Joe Holt inside the opening 20 minutes put the skids under the Cobbydalers. A strike from Jamie McDonald just four minutes into the second half ended the contest despite Lee Spires netting a consolation for Silsden.
