BRADFORD No 1 AA

IT’S been a good week for carp anglers in the club, particularly at Knotford and Harold Park, with some great fish coming from both lakes.

Both of the biggest commons have been caught this week from Knotford, including the largest being caught twice in five days!

Richard Idell was first up, catching ‘Jimmy’s fish’ at 31lb, followed a few days later by Allan Allcock catching the bigger carp, known as Dave’s, at 34lb 9oz, which is it’s highest yet and a new personal best for Allan.

This fish was caught again on Monday by John Leyland as the first of a number of fish caught in a session, which also included a common carp weighing 25lb 6oz. Gaz Marshall has also had a new personal best from the lake at 20lb 4oz.

Conditions for the A Phillips Memorial Members’ Match on the River Aire were hardly conducive for bream fishing, with bright sunshine coupled with no wind – a rarity for Beal.

The winner was Andy Jacques with 8lb 12oz of roach, followed by Fred Prudham with 6lb 10oz and Ian Bradley with 5lb 9oz. Nick Michael still leads the aggregate weight with 46lb going into the final two matches at Cowthorpe and Raskelf. Andy’s win moved him into second place with 42lb 1½oz, while Fred jumped up to third with 37lb 9oz.

Some sections of the River Calder will be closed on Sunday for the fourth round of the Calder League. Tickets are available from Simon on 01274-571175 for the Lower Aire Championship at Beal on Sunday, August 19. This match is held jointly with Leeds DASA, and another large turnout is expected.

Despite the rivers returning to their low and clear states there has been good catches of chub and barbel coming from the River Nidd at Cowthorpe and River Swale at Thornton Bridge.

After the match, a presentation and buffet was held at the Anglers’ Club.

Fishing at Knotford remains difficult but rewarding, with the largest carp this season weighing 31lb 4oz being caught by G Crossley, who has fished the venue for several years. A carp weighing 28lb has been caught at the polo pond.

BRADFORD SEA AC

Report from Culdaff in Co Donegal: The six members that went had a good trip – not as good as previous years but nevertheless a good trip. Plenty of pollock and coalfish, 21 tope boated and released.

The highlight of the trip was a 126lb porbeagle shark caught by David Taylor. After a titanic battle, having stripped 300 yards of line of his reel in a matter of seconds, it then swam under the boat twice before it was eventually brought aboard 35 minutes later to weight it.

Our next trip is on Saturday, August 25. Five members are off to Scrabster in Scotland for five days; fishing. Our next meeting is on Tuesday, August 21 at the New Inn, East Bierley (8pm). New members will be made most welcome.
