CITY will face a strong test at Shrewsbury Town when they raise the curtain on their season, according to head coach Michael Collins.

The Bantams begin their term with a tough assignment against last season's losing League One play-off finalists who have had a summer of change, with Paul Hurst being replaced by John Askey as manager.

There may also be further changes for the Shrews ahead of the City clash, after Jon Nolan and Toto Nsiala both handed in written transfer requests and have not been training with the squad.

Collins said he has studied Shrewsbury in depth in his preparation for the game, saying his side can expect a powerful test in their opener.

He said he has been encouraged by his squad's commitment in training ahead of the season and sees the Shrews as offering a perfect test for them.

A busy summer has seen the Bantams bring in the likes of wingers Sean Scannell, Sherwin Seedorf, defender Kelvin Mellor and goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell.

Collins said: "They look as strong as they did last year.

"They look powerful up front. We are well aware of their strengths.

"If they can keep that squad together, I think they will be one of the teams pushing up again.

"They are a very good footballing side.

"It's a good one to start with, away from home.

"It will be a good test and is a good marker for us. It is going to be a difficult opening game, but we are confident.

"I am very, very relaxed going into the game and trust these players as I have worked with them for the best part of four weeks now.

"People will start to see our style of play against Shrewsbury. We will try to play on the front foot.

"I want people to see what we are about from the start. We will take it to the opposition.

"Our intensity levels have gone up in training this week as we get ready for the Shrewsbury game.

"All teams start on a level playing field.

"I am happy with how pre-season has gone."
