Water levels in the Dales rivers have remained low, despite a few showers this week. Water is clear but ranunculus seems to be keeping the fish under cover and reactive to flies. Mayfly hatches have started, and fish are rising to them steadily, with many anglers out on the rivers. Unfortunately we have had a report this week from the shared water at Carleton of an angler killing fish on this catch and release fishery.

Various reports have come from anglers on the still-waters this week. At Shipton, carp have been taking flies off the surface during huge hatches (though anglers should remember that zig-rig fishing is not allowed for fish welfare reasons), and good tench, bream and carp are all coming to nets. Unfortunately, we have also seen some criminal damage to a couple of fishing platforms, fish caught in trailing line, and reports of rubbish being left by careless and thoughtless anglers. Fish are also being reported at Oakworth and Shipton, though nothing special.

The River Aire has continued to produce some good fish for anglers, despite “howling wind, bright sunshine and low water levels” as one angler put it. Elsewhere, an attempt was made over the Bank Holiday weekend to capture and relocate the seal at Topcliffe on the Swale, but it was unsuccessful.

A polite reminder to all members fishing Knotford Lagoon that the gate must be locked at all times and the dip tank used for all nets, slings and unhooking mats. There have been a few occasions over recent weeks where the gate has been found unlocked, and any member found to be doing this may face a club ban. It is in everyone's interests to keep the site secure, both to protect the investments in fish stocks over recent years and for the security of members fishing the lake on a night.

Draw for this Sunday's RW Naylor Memorial committee match at Queen Mary's Ponds will take place at the lake at 10am.

The seal in the River Swale at Topcliffe, between Thirsk and Ripon, is still at liberty, despite several attempts to catch it and return it to more natural surroundings. Despite the fine weather, some trout anglers have struggled because of low river levels and bright sunshine.

There has been increased activity at Knotford Lagoon, but the venue is keeping some of its secrets. At the Polo Pond, good catches of roach and skimmers have been reported, along with the odd tench.
