HOSTS Drighlington and Alwoodley, who met in the Yorkshire Amateur League Premier Division, probably felt like a couple of boxers coming towards the end of the 12th and final round.

This was Drig's seventh match in 15 days and Alwoodley's sixth, but now leaders Drig are six points ahead with three games left, while the 2-1 defeat meant that fourth-placed Alwoodley cannot win the title.

Shane Sowden marked his return from suspension with a free-kick from distance to give the hosts the lead, but Alwoodley looked like they had rescued a point with an 89th-minute equaliser, only for the visiting keeper to fumble Tom Farrar's free-kick into his own net, with Alwoodley shouting for a free-kick.

Stanley United, who have 43 points from 19 matches, are the only team who can deny Drig, who are on 49 points.

Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves, who have climbed from the bottom of Division One to seventh in the second half of the season, continued the good work with a dominant 4-1 victory at weakened Rothwell.

Alex Gyte, Jacob Kellet, Brad Sharrock and Danny Kemp netted for Juniors.

In Division Two, Fairbank United are a solid fifth, but continued their trend of losing to teams above them in the table when they went down 5-2 at Woodkirk Valley, who probably only need one point from their last two matches to go up.

Junaid Ali and Hassan Iqbal netted for United in the first half, giving them a 2-2 scoreline at half-time.

James Wilby netted for Gildersome Spurs Old Boys in the second half at home to Leeds City Old Boys Thirds, but that was as good as it got in a 3-1 defeat.

Also in Division Four, Prospect improved their promotion chances with a 7-2 victory over Drighlington Reserves, the goals coming from Dave Carrigan (2), substitute Abdallah Hyder (2), Nathan Bailey, Steve Thwaites and Adam Zenkovic.

The largest division in the league is Division Five, with 13 teams, and third-placed St Bede's Reserves staved off battle fatigue with a 3-1 victory at Thornesians Thirds.

Bede's led 2-0 at half-time thanks to Tom Mozley and the division's leading scorer Michael Dougan, who now has 29 goals.

Thornesians pulled a goal back in the second half but they were finished off by Kristops Balodis.
