CITY are set to unveil two more new faces after capturing German giant Kai Bruenker.

The 23-year-old striker joined for an undisclosed fee from SC Freiburg to provide Charlie Wyke with the physical back-up he has lacked.

And he is set to be followed into Valley Parade by Ryan McGowan and Matty Lund.

Australian international defender McGowan flew in from Dubai last night and will complete his move once he has passed a medical.

Burton boss Nigel Clough yesterday confirmed City’s interest in midfielder Lund, who is expected to join on loan in time for tomorrow’s home game against Wimbledon.

Clough also mentioned the Bantams had asked about another player, who could also be heading to Valley Parade.

The flurry of late activity in the window to bolster Stuart  McCall’s stretched squad was kicked off by Bruenker, who has scored eight goals in 20 games for Freiburg II this season in Germany’s fourth tier.

“I don’t think it’s a secret we’ve been looking for that physical type of striker,” said the City boss. “We’ve had a couple of enquiries knocked back.

“But we’re looking at other areas of the pitch as well and hopefully prior to the game we can get a couple in. If not, certainly before the window closes – a couple might be loans and a couple permanents.

“I know we will be stronger in the next ten days with those coming back from injury and three or four new players in the building. That will be the case.”

City still remain keen on Chesterfield’s Kristian Dennis, although the Spireites knocked back their original bid as “way too low”. But Bruenker will give them an alternative target man to the workhorse Wyke.

Head of recruitment Greg Abbott said: “One of the main reasons for bringing a player like Kai into the club is that he can give some protection to Charlie.

“Kai is a big, strong, powerful player. He is someone who our European scouting network has identified as an option to allow us to rest Charlie as and when needed.

“Kai is another physical option for us in attack. We have sometimes struggled in that department, especially when Charlie has been out through injury.

“This is the start of what we hope will be an eventful few days for the club. We are hopeful of making one or two more signings soon to go with Kai.”

The Telegraph & Argus understands that everything has been agreed with McGowan and Al-Sharjah, the club where he has been playing in the United Arab Emirates.

He will still need international clearance which will rule him out from playing this weekend.

McGowan, who McCall and number two Kenny Black know well from his time in Scotland with Hearts and Dundee United, will answer the SOS for a right back. With his height, he can also play equally effectively as a centre half.

His capture will presumably open the door for Scunthorpe to come back in for the unsettled Tony McMahon. Wigan were also monitoring the situation but have not as yet followed that up.

Northern Ireland international Lund joined Burton in the summer from Rochdale but has not featured for the Championship side since November.

Clough is open to him going out on loan to get regular games and City would fit the bill.
