Stuart McCall is running the rule over former Brentford winger Alex Rhodes.

The pacy wideman featured against Blackpool in a behind-closed-doors friendly today.

McCall, who saw his side perform well in a 2-1 defeat against the Championship newcomers, has a possible vacancy for a left-sided player in his squad.

Rhodes, 24, who had loan spells at Swindon and Grays last season, looked sharp operating on both flanks.

"He was released from Brentford and has been up on trial with Darlington," said McCall.

"We had him for this match and he'll be here for another couple of days.

"The left-hand side is a position we're still looking at filling and I thought he did okay. We'll have another look at him in training."

The boss also sprang a surprise by playing old boy Xavi Barrau.

The Frenchman caused a stir by scoring two goals in the final game of the last campaign against Millwall, having barely featured since arriving from Airdrie in March.

He was released having apparently demanded too much money but is now seeking another chance at the Coral Windows Stadium.

McCall explained: "I asked Xavi to come down in pre-season but he didn't.

"His previous agent probably thought he could get him a deal elsewhere and he's been to Luton.

"However, his other agent has since come back and basically asked me if we'll have a look. I said if he wanted to train with us he's more than welcome.

"I didn't know much about him as he was here under the previous management. He played a half yesterday and did all right but I don't know if anything will come of it."

The League Two season starts in less than a fortnight but McCall insists he is in no rush to make another signing.
