WYKE Wanderers suffered a demoralising 4-0 West Yorkshire League defeat at Carlton Athletic in their fight to avoid relegation from the Premier Division.

Carlton quickly got into the game and scored after ten minutes before Wanderers rallied and began to push forward. The hosts missed a couple of other chances and could have gone further ahead but Wyke had efforts themselves.

The second half was more even in the early stages but a mistake led to Carlton going further ahead. Wanderers continued to try and get back into the game but an unfortunate slice of the ball at the near post led to an own goal giving the home side a 3-0 lead.

Wyke pushed on but Carlton added a fourth goal to wrap up the game. Yet the scoreline did not reflect Wyke's effort, with James Stansfield and Carlton Reid immense in the middle of their defence.

Baildon Trinity Athletic are still in a relegation place in Division One following their 2-1 loss at high-flying Boroughbridge.

Trinity arrived hoping to upset the form book as they lined up with a 4-5-1 formation and a plan to contain and hit their opponents on the counter-attack.

These tactics looked set to pay dividends when, in the tenth minute, Jamie Sykes burst through from midfield and placed a shot from the edge of the penalty box into the top corner.

But Boroughbridge came back into the match and a miscommunication in the Baildon defence led to an indirect free-kick that was duly dispatched.

In the second half, Boroughbridge took the initiative and created several chances and they got the winner in the 75th minute with a good header following a cross from the right.

Baildon had several chances in the final ten minutes through Andrew Radosevic and Dean Rands, who saw his volley from the edge of the area go just wide.

Wyke Wanderers Reserves suffered a 5-1 defeat at Boroughbridge Reserves in Alliance Division One.

Boroughbridge had the best of the first half and enjoyed several chances before going ahead on the half-hour mark.

Wyke responded well and, from a Shahid Hussain corner, debutant Adam Finley equalised with a bullet header. But Boroughbridge were again on top after the break and mistakes by the home side put them further ahead, eventually running out emphatic winners.

Wyke secretary Dave Ryan said: "This was a tough game for a young Wyke side, with several players called up for first-team duty and a few new players making their debuts."

Ben Baker, Liam Lambert and Tom Ponter were on target for Field Reserves in their 3-0 win against Headingley Reserves in the West Riding County Challenge Trophy.
