No-one can accuse the interviewing panel at Clayborn of not keeping an open mind during the process of appointing a new manager.

The man who got the job, Gerry Quinn, was the last of a dozen candidates to be seen.

Quinn, who is local to the Cleckheaton and Spenborough area, has an impressive CV, having managed in the Conference.

He was boss at Altrincham during a very successful period for the non-league club on the south side of Manchester.

He has coached, assisted and managed at a host of other clubs but has been out of the game for almost two years. It was a self-inflicted sabbatical due to an illness suffered by a family member.

Good news on that front prompted a return of the football bug to Quinn and he has been looking for the right opportunity to get back into the game.

He had watched a few Sedge games but it was by chance that he attended a game just after Eugene Lacy resigned.

"I think that's why his application was one of the last we received," said club secretary and press officer Mick Balmforth.

"The way the interviews were scheduled meant he was the last. There had been some very good people in the 11 we had already seen but I have to say Gerry came over very well.

"He has the experience, has kept his finger on the pulse while he hasn't been at a club and still has a lot of contacts. He started on Tuesday and said he wanted to work with the people already here in the coaching roles."

Simon Wood will revert to the academy after assisting caretaker manager Mark Brier in the interim.

Wood said: "Gerry has asked Mark to help him out for a short while until he finds his feet. I have no idea what his intentions are in the long term but he is keen to see the structure and the coaches at all levels before making any possible changes."
