Old Batelians are through to the Wheatley Cup final for the first time after defeating West Riding County Amateur League First Division opponents Lower Hopton 2-1 at Liversedge FC.

They will meet either Wyke Wanderers or Gawthorpe, who meet on Wednesday, in the final.

Batelians were in charge for much of the game but Lower Hopton took the lead after 15 minutes.

It was not until the 37th minute that Batelians equalised when Mark Heseldin noticed the Hopton keeper off his line and lobbed him from 25 yards.

In the 70th minute, a long, raking Dave Bordman free-kick defeated the static Hopton defence and fell nicely for skipper Rob Bordman, who, in a flash, controlled the ball and drove home from 20 yards.

Batelians enjoyed more possession, created more half-chances and looked as solid as a rock at the back, with keeper Michael Smith making three excellent saves, including one superb catch from a corner.

In the Yorkshire Amateur League's Senior A Division, Grangefield Old Boys lead the table with six points from third-placed Gildersome Spurs Old Boys, who have six games in hand, after a 3-3 draw.

Attacks down the right from Grangefield brought them two goals within five minutes by Kristian Dacre and Grant Jackson but by the 20th minutes parity had been restored with firstly Steve Wales, from the spot, and secondly Ben Keedy netting.

But Spurs were then guilty of standing and watching as Matty Tomlinson netted a cracking shot in the 75th minute, and there were only two minutes to go when Wales added his second penalty to make the score 3-3.

In the Senior B Division, Calverley United thrived on using a pitch that was larger and in better condition than their Victoria Park and won 8-4 at Leeds Medics & Dentists Reserves.

Scorers for third-placed Calverley, who were never in arrears, were James Todd (2), Nyall Rosendale, Chris Cookson, Brad Northrop, Matthew Addey, Ben Binns and Tom Westerman.

Dave Emms (2), Nick Turnbull and James Evans (penalty) replied for Medics, who were lucky that none of the top teams, bar Calverley, won.

Ninth-placed St Bede's Old Boys suffered a humiliating 7-0 defeat at home to bottom club Beeston St Anthony's and are in danger of getting embroiled in a relegation struggle.

In Division One, Farsley Celtic Juniors are 11 points behind leaders Farnley Sports with four games in hand after a 7-0 victory at Huddersfield Amateur Reserves. Goals came from Ben Cook (3), Jonathan Kasher (2), Si McQuiston and Andy Cooper.

AFC Heckmondwike led Gildersome Spurs Old Boys Reserves 3-0 at half-time in a mid-table clash but needed a Noel Whitaker goal with almost the last touch of the game to win 4-3.

Mark Harrison, an own goal from a Joel Pollard cross and a stunning volley from Elliott Williams put Heckmondwike in control but Spurs' second-half revival came with goals by Jordan Brereton, Josh Sheldrake and James Wilby before Williams created Heckmondwike's winner.

St Bede's Reserves continue to play better away from home in Division Two and won 4-3 at Amaranth in another mid-table battle, thanks to an own goal and a hat-trick by Jerome Yewdall, who took his seasonal goal tally to 16.

Matthew Cunningham (2) and Mark Ferguson were on target for Farnsley Sports Reserves, who won 3-0 at Collegians Reserves to set them up for a probable fifth-placed finish in Division Four in their debut season in the league.

St Bede's Thirds remain fifth in Division Five, despite their biggest win of the season - an 8-1 triumph at Batelians Thirds.

Danny Burke (3), Kev Benson (3), Colin Usher and Chris Barwick were the marksmen for Bede's, James Bland getting the consolation.
