SIR - BBC TV's recent two-part programme We are British Jews, focussing on eight Jewish people of different ages and backgrounds, was powerful and highly informative. And, of course, it is particularly relevant just now.

We heard their individual opinions in interactions with one another and interviewed separately. They visited Israel together, speaking to numerous people, both Israeli Jews and Arabs and Palestinians. The eight didn't always agree with one another and it was useful to have the the narrator at times giving factual information which sometimes backed up or contradicted what was said.

The most powerful and effective scene came at the end of the second part when two friends - a Jew and and a Palestinian - spoke movingly to the group about losing their daughters to the 'troubles.' Yet they still showed empathy for the other 'side'. Both hoped and believed that peace is still possible and these two men clearly had an enormous effect on certain members of the group.

This mini-series should be required viewing for students in educational establishments up and down the country.
