SIR - Jasvinder Sanghera, a leading campaigner against forced marriage, has urged authorities to be much firmer with such offences, with only two convictions since 2014 in West Yorkshire (T&A, Aug 28).

She is absolutely right, and there has to be great concern that many such instances do not come to light due to family and other pressures.

However, there is much more to this than might initially appear to be the case.

It seems that it is not unusual for South Asian families to organise prospective arranged marriages when children can be well under the age of consent.

This is something that I have said before, but all the more reason to totally ban arranged marriages, which surely should have no place in this country in the 21st century. The dangers are there for all to see.
