SIR – With regard to ‘Queen unveils bomber memorial to 55,573 RAF crew who died in the Second World War’ (T&A, June 29).
One of my Scottish uncles, who was a flying officer trained by Pan-Am at Florida University as a navigator once said to me: “There was nothing more guaranteed to make the bowels move than flying over Germany at night”.
My mother told me that such was the loss of life among RAF crews that nobody who knew my uncle expected him to outlive the war’ Luckily he did.
