SIR – Re: ‘The end at last for Death Row” (T&A, June 29.). Death Row used to be known as ‘The Square’, and the general area was merely referred to as Westgate, Goitside being on the other side of Sunbridge Road.

Westgate, while dominated by ‘flats’, never had the air of an estate, in spite of the number of residents crammed in to a tight area.

Unsophisticated, but a great place to grow up. All of life was there to sample. Regular Salvation Army parades, Rebecca Street Mission, ministers belting out hymns in the street on Sunday evenings (summer), youth clubs, a night club, pubs, city centre literally across the road, and our own wide array of shops in the immediate locality – we even had a phone box. The sense of community was phenomenal.

The Square was the area’s ‘premium’ housing. If you could find your way up the housing list and get yourself the key to one of those doors, you had arrived. You might even be posh; after all, some had gardens!

Their demise is sad, but progress happens, so good luck with the redevelopment. At least this former Westgate resident has got some terrific memories far removed from Death Row.
